I was born in Austin, Texas, but actually grew up in Tokyo, Japan. I graduated from prep school (St. Gregory's) in 1963 and finished my BA at The University of Texas at Austin in 1971. I worked as a graphic designer and photographer in Austin till my partner retired and we moved to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico in 1996. I worked as editor of Atencion San Miguel until we moved to Patzcuaro, Michoacan, where I started two small, tourist-oriented magazines. We moved to Mexico City to work on a new English-language daily that did not finally materialize, but stayed on in the City to write for an online news pub called MrNewsMx, as well as for Mexico Connect and Latino Leaders. My partner had a pallidotomy operation in 2001, and for his health we decided to return to the provinces and clean air. We found an ancient and beautiful house on the plaza in Erongaricuaro, which we have restored and named Colectiva Las Rosas, an artistic red enclave in Erongaricuaro, Michoacan, a small village on the shores of Lake Patzcuaro that has always welcomed leftists and artists. A bust of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico's brilliant president who nationalized the nation's oil, stands in front of our house on the plaza. Local people say the president used to dance and deport in our living room with the young ladies of the house. We are interested in hearing, especially, from people who are trying to live sanely and collectively in an insane capitalist world. We host travelling writers and artists, hold workshops, plein air painting sessions, literary readings, art openings, music and dance events, and lively community parties. We and our Mexican friends and partners, Juan and Maria de la Salud, run a popular and trendy clothing store in the shop at the front of our house. Their son, a rollicking two-year-old named Fernando, lives with us. Our collective also includes people who live elsewhere, here in Eronga and in DF and the US.
